Hi Drew, We met a couple weeks ago while you were out canvassing in my neighborhood. I mentioned that one of my concerns was pedestrian and cyclist road safety. I’m writing to get your thoughts on the “Safe Streets for Kids Act” proposed by one of your fellow town council candidates for regulating e-bikes. While presented as a balanced, “bipartisan” solution to regulating e-bikes, it strikes me as anything but. The proposal, as I understand it, would effectively ban most youth from using e-bikes entirely and create significant barriers to adoption for older teens and even adults by requiring permits and/or registration. It would also empower municipalities to establish “no-ride” zones. I don’t think discouraging alternative forms of transportation will make our streets safer. I don’t personally own an e-bike, but I think they can be a useful form of transportation while taking up less road space and polluting less than cars. WDC candidates can pay lip service to “driver accountability” and “safer infrastructure” but as long as we continue to give priority to cars and treat e-bikes as the problem nothing will change.
